An early morning train bound for Mobile became part of a heartbreaking tragedy in Theodore when it collided with a vehicle on the tracks near Cary Hamilton Road. The crash claimed the lives of 31-year-old Brittany Williams and her 8-year-old daughter just before 7 a.m. Saturday.
According to authorities, the Amtrak train was moving toward the city when the vehicle entered the railroad crossing. All standard safety systems were active at the time. Warning lights were flashing. Bells were sounding. Crossing arms were down. Despite that, witnesses reported the car drove onto the tracks.

The impact was severe. The train pushed forward more than 2,000 feet before it could fully stop. No one aboard the train was injured. Officials from the Mobile Police Department confirmed that both Brittany and her daughter died at the scene.
Investigators spent hours examining the crossing equipment and interviewing witnesses. They determined that the signal systems were functioning properly. The focus now remains on reconstructing the final moments leading up to the collision.
Rail crossings are designed with multiple layers of warning for a reason. Engineers rely on those systems to prevent tragedies like this one. When a vehicle enters the track area during active warnings, the stopping distance of a train makes avoidance nearly impossible.
As crews cleared the site, traffic was rerouted and the area remained shut down for much of the morning. The routine rhythm of train movement and neighborhood life paused under flashing emergency lights.
Behind the technical details and measurements is a deeper loss. Brittany Williams leaves behind grieving relatives who describe her as protective and kind. Her young daughter, just eight years old, had a future that now exists only in memory.
The community in Theodore continues to mourn. Flowers and quiet prayers mark a crossing that many drivers pass every day. The investigation will continue, but for one family, the damage is already permanent.
