Richmond’s Shockoe Bottom turned into a scene of tragedy early Saturday morning when a fight on North 18th Street escalated into a deadly shooting, killing two people and injuring seven others. The area, usually filled with weekend crowds and nightlife, was quieting down after bars closed when the violence erupted shortly before 3 a.m.
Among the victims was 23-year-old Genesis Tamar Jones of Petersburg, who had traveled to Richmond for her brother’s birthday celebration. Her family said she was simply walking through the neighborhood when gunfire rang out, leaving her fatally wounded. The second person killed was identified as 42-year-old Dominic Antoine Jackson of Henrico.
Police say the shooting stemmed from a verbal altercation that quickly turned physical and then deadly when at least two people opened fire. Officers already in the area responding to other calls witnessed what looked like a large fight and cars racing through the street before the first shots were fired.
Bar employees at nearby establishments recalled hearing a series of rapid gunshots that were louder and longer than anything they had heard before. One described patrons ducking for cover as the barrage of shots echoed through the streets.
Authorities reported collecting evidence from the scene, including more than 50 shell casings and at least two firearms. Investigators are reviewing video footage and interviewing witnesses as part of an ongoing investigation. No suspects have been publicly identified or arrested yet. �
The injured included both men and women, some with serious wounds and others with injuries not considered life-threatening. Emergency responders transported several victims to local hospitals for treatment.
For families and friends of those affected, a night that should have been filled with celebration and community has instead turned into a painful reminder of how quickly moments can turn tragic. As the city seeks answers, many are left grappling with loss and the urgent need for solutions to prevent similar violence in the future.
