Richmond Shockoe Bottom Shooting Leaves Two Dead, Seven Hurt in Early-Morning Chaos

Richmond’s historic Shockoe Bottom neighborhood was the scene of heartbreak early Saturday when a late-night street fight turned deadly, leaving two people dead and seven others wounded. Around 2:45 a.m., police say a large argument erupted on North 18th Street after bars had closed for the night, and within moments multiple people pulled firearms and started shooting. The violence rattled a community that had gathered in the district known for its nightlife.

The first fatality was 23-year-old Genesis Tamar Jones of Petersburg, who family members say was in Richmond celebrating her younger brother’s birthday. She was struck by gunfire while walking through the area and was pronounced dead at the scene. Later officers found 42-year-old Dominic Antoine Jackson of Henrico also suffering fatal wounds.

Witnesses described sudden chaos as shots rang out in rapid succession. Bar staff nearby said they initially didn’t realize how serious the situation was until the gunfire continued, with one worker saying she had never heard so many shots in a row. Cars in the area were spotted speeding away as the scene unfolded.

Police Chief Rick Edwards said at least two shooters were involved, and more than 50 shell casings were collected at the scene. Investigators towed several vehicles and began reviewing surveillance and bystander footage to piece together what happened. No arrests had been announced by late Saturday.

Of the seven others struck by gunfire, four were taken to hospitals by ambulance and three arrived in private vehicles. Police said injuries ranged from non-life-threatening to serious, and all victims were adults between their early 20s and early 40s.

For many in the neighborhood, what was meant to be a night out turned into a tragedy that highlighted ongoing concerns about late-night violence in popular districts. Residents and city officials are now calling for renewed efforts to curb gun violence and keep people safe as the investigation continues.

As detectives follow leads and sift through evidence, the families of Jones and Jackson are left to mourn losses that should never have happened on what began as an ordinary night on Shockoe
