FERGUSON LOSSES: Former Fire Chief Henry Williams and Woman Killed in North County Shooting, Suspect Charged

FERGUSON, Mo. – Ferguson is reeling after a late winter evening turned into a nightmare for two families and a whole community. Saturday around 6:15 p.m., police and emergency crews were called to a home in the 500 block of North Clay Avenue where a shooting had been reported. When officers arrived they found two people with serious gunshot wounds.

Despite life-saving efforts by first responders, both victims died at the scene. One has been identified as 61-year-old Henry Williams, a former fire chief in nearby Berkeley who was well known for his decades of service and leadership in the community. The second victim, a woman, has not yet been publicly named as authorities complete autopsy and next-of-kin notifications.

Police took a woman into custody at the scene and quickly began a thorough investigation. By Sunday afternoon, the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office had authorized charges. The suspect, 61-year-old Linda Hayden of Ferguson, was formally charged with two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of armed criminal action. She remains in the St. Louis County Justice Center on a $2 million cash-only bond.

Ferguson Police Chief Troy Doyle spoke to the press with a tone of gravity and heartbreak, stressing that while the news cycle moves on, the suffering of families does not. He called the incident deeply tragic and said there is no indication of an ongoing threat to anyone else in the community. Police have described the case as isolated and domestic-related in nature, with detectives continuing to sift through evidence with help from specialized units.

Friends and former colleagues remembered Williams as a dedicated leader who helped shape the Berkeley Fire Department and mentored many younger firefighters. In conversations around Ferguson Sunday, residents expressed sorrow at the sudden loss of a familiar face and the pain now borne by two families.

Officials have pledged to keep the community informed as the case moves through the courts. With emotions still raw, neighbors are leaning on each other, lighting candles, and sharing memories as a way to cope with the shock and grief that have descended on this corner of North County.
