A normally quiet evening at a Kokomo apartment erupted into tragedy on Tuesday when a shooting claimed the life of a young woman and left her newborn injured. What started as a call about a self-inflicted gunshot wound quickly turned into a criminal investigation, and now a husband faces serious charges in connection with the incident.
Officers responding to reports just after 7 p.m. on February 24 were sent to 419 West Lincoln Road in Kokomo. Inside the apartment, they found 21-year-old Jessica M. Tomlinson lying on the floor with a gunshot wound to her upper torso. Despite efforts by first responders to save her, she died at the scene.
Also inside the unit were her husband, 21-year-old Cameron Tomlinson, and their 1-month-old infant. The baby suffered a gunshot wound to the hand and was quickly treated at Community Howard Regional Health Hospital before being flown to Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis. Medical staff describe the infant as stable and recovering from the injury.
Initial information given to officers suggested that Jessica might have accidentally shot herself while holding the firearm and the baby. Neighbors heard the loud bang and saw the flurry of emergency vehicles arriving shortly after. Some described the couple as young and deeply attached to their tiny child, making the scene all the more shocking.
