Kokomo’s tight-knit community is reeling after a young mother lost her life and her newborn was badly hurt in a shooting inside an apartment Tuesday evening. What police initially believed was a tragic accident has now turned into an active criminal case, leaving neighbors and family searching for answers.
Tuesday just after 7 p.m., officers were called to an apartment at 419 West Lincoln Road in Kokomo on reports of a gunshot wound. When they arrived, they found 21-year-old Jessica M. Tomlinson collapsed on the floor with a serious gunshot injury to her upper chest. Emergency responders immediately began life-saving efforts, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Inside the apartment with her were her husband, 21-year-old Cameron Tomlinson, and their 1-month-old baby. The infant had been in Jessica’s arms when the shooting happened and was struck in the hand. Paramedics took the child to Community Howard Regional Health Hospital before transferring the baby to Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis. Doctors say the child is now in stable condition, but the wound left significant trauma.
Early reports from witnesses and initial questioning suggested Jessica may have been handling a firearm while holding the baby when it went off. Neighbors were shaken, recalling the sound of the shot and the rush of police and medical personnel to the scene. Family members described Jessica as a devoted young mother who doted on her tiny child and was excited about the future.
Police conducted a thorough investigation, speaking with neighbors, family, and Cameron Thomas, while collecting evidence from the apartment. As detectives pieced together what happened, their focus shifted from accident to potential criminal recklessness. By Tuesday night, Cameron was taken into custody and later transported to the Howard County Criminal Justice Center. He now faces preliminary charges of Reckless Homicide and Criminal Recklessness.
Community members are left grappling with sorrow and confusion. A quiet residential block just moments before was suddenly the site of tragedy that no one expected. Friends and relatives of Jessica have gathered outside local gathering places, remembering her warmth, her smile, and the tragedy of a life cut short. The infant, tiny and resilient, remains under medical care, a reminder of both fragility and hope amid grief.
Police say the investigation is ongoing and ask anyone with information to reach out to the Kokomo Police Department. Family members have not yet released a full statement, but neighbors say they hope the truth comes to light and that justice, in whatever form, will help bring some sense of closure to a heartbreaking night in this Indiana city.
