St. Clair Shores — In the early hours of Wednesday, a hit-and-run crash on westbound Interstate 94 left a woman dead and sparked an active police investigation. The incident unfolded near Shady Lane between 8 and 9 Mile Roads, where drivers reported seeing a body in the traffic lanes just after 1 a.m.
When police arrived, they found a woman lying in the right lane. Nearby, off the freeway, was an SUV with no one inside. Officers believe the vehicle may have been hers and that she might have left it after a crash. Before she could reach safety, another vehicle struck her and did not stop.

The freeway was shut down for several hours as investigators documented the scene and worked to determine what led to the collision. Westbound lanes and the nearby entrance and exit ramps were closed, snarling early traffic until reopening mid-morning around 5:30 a.m.
Officials have not yet identified the victim publicly, nor have they released details about the vehicle that fled. Police are urging anyone who witnessed the crash or has dashcam footage to come forward to help with the investigation.
Motorists who were diverted during the closures described long delays and a grim atmosphere near the crash site. Local authorities reminded drivers of the dangers of walking on high-speed roadways and the severity of leaving a crash scene.
As investigators sift through the evidence, family and friends of the woman are left in shock, awaiting answers about how she came to be on the busy stretch of freeway that fateful morning.
Police continue to investigate and have asked for the public’s help in identifying the vehicle involved in the hit-and-run that claimed her life.
