Bethel Island Man Shot Dead on Dutch Slough Road Identified as Edward Garofalo IV

Bethel Island, California — A 38‑year‑old Martinez man died Monday night after being shot along Dutch Slough Road, turning a quiet stretch of this rural community into the scene of a homicide investigation.

Deputies from the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office responded just before 9 p.m. to the 3200 block of Dutch Slough Road after 911 calls reported gunfire. When they reached the area, they found Edward Garofalo IV lying in the middle of the road with at least one gunshot wound. Rescue crews tried to save him on the pavement, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Friends and neighbors describe Garofalo as someone who often drove through the area and knew people from across the delta communities around Bethel Island. His loss has left acquaintances in Martinez and beyond shocked and looking for answers.

Homicide detectives have taken over the case, combing the road for evidence and speaking with residents who might have seen anything out of the ordinary that evening. So far, authorities have made no arrests and released no descriptions of a suspect or suspects involved. The sheriff’s office says the investigation remains active.

People who live near the scene say the stretch of Dutch Slough Road can feel isolated at night. The area is known for fishing and boating access during the day, but when the sun goes down it turns quiet. Residents tell reporters they hope law enforcement can shed light on what happened to Garofalo.

Sheriff’s officials continue to ask anyone with information related to the shooting to contact investigators. Local community members are also urging others who witnessed the incident to come forward so Garofalo’s family can find closure.

In the wake of his death, condolences are pouring in from friends who remember Garofalo’s easygoing manner. For now, though, the questions about why he was shot and who was responsible remain unanswered as the investigation continues.
