GAINESVILLE, Ga. — A late‑night call for help turned into a tense confrontation that ended with a young man dead and at least one police officer hurt early Friday, authorities said. What began as a fear‑for‑safety call at around 10:30 p.m. Thursday in a quiet neighborhood near Briarwood Drive and Skyline Drive quickly escalated into a standoff that lasted several hours.
Officers were sent after a woman called 911, telling dispatch she felt threatened by a man inside a nearby home. When police arrived, they found the suspect, later identified as 24‑year‑old Dakota Levi Simmons of Gainesville, in the house along with a woman and two children.

As officers moved in, Simmons opened fire. One officer was struck in the chest area, but his protective gear and the radio mic on his uniform deflected the bullet and likely saved his life. He was taken to a hospital and has since been released.
After the first exchange, Simmons retreated deeper into the home and refused to come out. Police pulled the family safely away and called in SWAT and negotiators. For roughly three hours, officers tried to talk him into surrendering, but he continued to fire from inside the residence.
Shortly before dawn, Simmons stepped outside and again exchanged gunfire with law enforcement. In that final confrontation, he was struck and killed on the scene. Two more officers were also treated for injuries related to the standoff, including stress and elevated heart rates, but none were life‑threatening.
Police leadership described the incident as tragic and emotional. The Gainesville Police Chief said officers had hoped for a peaceful end but had to act when the suspect refused to stand down. Neighbors in the Sunset Heights area reported a long night of sirens and tension before the situation finally ended early Friday morning.
An independent review of the shooting has been requested from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, a standard step in cases involving officer‑involved shootings. Officials have not released the names of the officers involved as family notifications continue and the investigation remains active.
