Chicago Heights — Flames and twisted metal lit up the intersection of Chicago Road and Joe Orr Road around 4:30 p.m. Friday when a five‑vehicle collision left two drivers dead and three juveniles injured. The Cook County Medical Examiner later identified the drivers as 26‑year‑old Nacease Spring and 45‑year‑old Tyra Willingham.
Witnesses said the scene looked like a demolition derby. One driver described cars scattered across the roadway and a vehicle burst into flames. Emergency crews raced in, pulled people from mangled cars and rushed the injured to nearby hospitals. Two people were pronounced dead at the scene.

Three juveniles were treated and transported to local hospitals; officials said all three are expected to survive. Police released few details about their conditions and withheld names to protect privacy.
A snapped utility pole left hundreds without power briefly as crews worked to secure the wreck and restore services. Neighbors watched in shock, people consoling one another while first responders combed the area for evidence.
Chicago Heights police said speed may have been a factor but stressed the investigation is ongoing. Officers are reviewing video, witness statements and vehicle damage to piece together what happened and expect to release more information when the probe concludes.
Friends and family gathered near the scene, grief visible on many faces. “It’s beyond belief,” one local worker said, echoing the stunned reaction of neighbors who called the crash the worst they’d seen in the area.
Authorities urged drivers to slow down and exercise caution at busy intersections. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office and Chicago Heights police continue their work into the tragic crash.
