Hickory Child Abel Friday Dies in Drowning at Bruce Meisner Park

HICKORY, North Carolina — The community is holding its breath after the sudden and tragic death of 7‑year‑old Abel Friday, who drowned on Wednesday evening at Bruce Meisner Park.

It was about 6:52 p.m. on April 1 when emergency crews were called to the park after reports of a child in distress in water connected to the park. First responders found Abel submerged roughly 10 feet deep. Firefighters pulled him from the water and rushed him to Frye Regional Medical Center.

Doctors worked to save him, but Abel was later pronounced dead. Authorities say his next of kin has been notified. The Catawba County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the circumstances surrounding the drowning to understand exactly what happened.

Bruce Meisner Park is a 75‑acre recreation area on Cloninger Mill Road, near Lake Hickory. For those who knew Abel, the park was a place of laughter, play, and everyday adventure — until grief replaced joy.

Friends, neighbors, and complete strangers have shared in the heartbreak. Many spoke of Abel as a bright, joyful child whose kindness and energy lifted everyone around him. The suddenness of his passing has left a hole in the heart of this community.

Abel’s youth football team, the Mt. View Tigers Youth Football & Cheer, issued a heartfelt tribute. They remembered him not just as #22 on the field, but as a teammate and friend whose smile lit up every practice and game.

“We lost a member of our football family,” the team said. They asked the community to pray for Abel’s family, teammates, and coaches as they try to make sense of the loss. “His smile, energy, and love for the game will never be forgotten.”

As the sun sets on a community still grappling with loss, the memory of Abel Friday stays vivid — a young life full of promise taken far too soon. Rest in peace, Abel Friday. Forever taken, forever remembered.
