St. Florian, Alabama was quiet on a Sunday afternoon until a deadly head-on collision on March 1 changed lives forever. That afternoon, 33-year-old Daria A. Smith of Nashville, Tennessee was driving a 2015 Nissan Rogue on Lauderdale County Road 47 near the intersection with County Road 63, just northeast of the town, when her vehicle collided with a 2018 Jeep Wrangler.
Troopers say Smith’s SUV crossed into the path of the other vehicle around 12:01 p.m. Her Rogue was struck head-on by the Jeep driven by David T. Martin, 52, of Lexington. Emergency crews arrived quickly, but Smith had suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. She was not wearing a seat belt at the time, according to investigators.
Martin was hurt in the impact and was taken by ambulance to North Alabama Medical Center in Florence. His injuries were serious enough to require treatment but he survived.
