What started as a speeding stop on a busy Atlanta interstate turned into a heartbreaking scene Monday afternoon in Fulton County when a high-speed police pursuit ended with the death of an innocent woman at a gas station parking lot.
Authorities said 51-year-old Chatanna Ohiyesha Patterson was standing beside a parked vehicle when a fleeing driver lost control and slammed into the lot at high speed. The impact left Patterson critically injured, and she was pronounced dead at the scene. Friends and family are now mourning a woman whose life ended without warning in the middle of an ordinary afternoon.

According to investigators, the incident began around 2:40 p.m. on Interstate 20 westbound. A Georgia State Patrol trooper attempted to stop a Hyundai Elantra that was reportedly traveling close to 90 miles per hour in a 55-mile-per-hour zone. Officials said the driver initially appeared to cooperate before suddenly accelerating away from the stop.
Troopers said the driver, identified as 26-year-old Fre’shun Tyai White of Marietta, drove recklessly across several lanes of traffic while trying to escape. Investigators said the vehicle exited onto Boulevard before re-entering the interstate in a dangerous manner that nearly caused several crashes with other drivers on the road.
Because of the danger to the public, the first trooper stopped actively pursuing the vehicle on the interstate. Another nearby trooper later spotted the Hyundai and attempted to catch up as the suspect continued speeding through the area.
Authorities said White eventually exited onto the Hill Street ramp at a very high speed. Investigators believe he lost control of the vehicle while crossing Hill Street, sending the Hyundai directly into a nearby gas station parking lot. The car crashed into a parked vehicle where Patterson was standing moments before the deadly collision.
White, along with a passenger inside the Hyundai and the driver of the parked vehicle, suffered serious injuries in the wreck. All three were transported to a local hospital for treatment. Officials have not released updated information about their conditions.
Investigators said White is now in custody and faces several charges, including first-degree vehicular homicide and serious injury by vehicle. State patrol officials later described the crash as a painful reminder of how dangerous high-speed pursuits and reckless driving can become within seconds. For one Fulton County family, the loss has already changed everything forever.
