Mamou Fire: Barbara and Kenneth Freeman Serie, Beloved Grandparents, Killed in Early Morning Fifth Street Blaze

The quiet Louisiana town of Mamou woke up to heartbreaking news early Tuesday after a fast-moving house fire claimed the lives of longtime residents Barbara and Kenneth Freeman Serie. The married couple, both in their mid-60s, died when flames tore through their home in the 800 block of Fifth Street before dawn.

Firefighters rushed to the scene shortly after 3 a.m. when the Mamou Fire Department received reports of a house engulfed in flames. By the time crews arrived, the single-family home was already heavily involved in fire. Inside the burning house were two occupants who could not escape the spreading smoke and heat.

Officials later confirmed that the victims were a 67-year-old man and a 63-year-old woman. Family members soon identified them as Kenneth and Barbara Serie, a married couple known around the neighborhood as devoted grandparents and friendly neighbors who had lived in the area for years.

Investigators with the Louisiana Office of State Fire Marshal determined that the fire appears to have started at the front of the home. With flames and smoke quickly blocking the path, the couple reportedly could not make it to the back door to escape.

Neighbors said the fire lit up the street in the middle of the night. Fire trucks lined the quiet residential block as crews battled the blaze for hours. Some residents said the flames continued burning until around five or six in the morning before firefighters finally brought the situation under control.

For people who knew the couple, the loss hit hard. Neighbor Candace Terry described them as kind and gentle people who were always pleasant to be around. She said the news shocked the entire community and left many struggling to process what had happened.

Behind them, the couple leaves a large and grieving family. Kenneth and Barbara Serie were parents to five children and grandparents to fifteen grandchildren. They were also great-grandparents to five young children who will grow up hearing stories about the loving pair who helped shape their family.

Authorities say the exact cause of the fire remains under investigation. Because of the heavy damage to the house, investigators are still working to determine what might have triggered the deadly blaze and whether safety devices such as smoke alarms were present.

As their loved ones cope with the sudden loss, family members and friends have begun rallying around one another. A fundraising effort has been created to help the family cover funeral costs and give the couple a dignified farewell.
