The quiet stretch of road north of Galena turned tragic Tuesday night when 19-year-old Braxon M. Gough lost his life in a fiery crash. The young man from Joplin was driving alone when everything went wrong in a matter of seconds.
The wreck happened around 7:45 p.m. at the intersection of S.E. 110th Street and S.E. Turkey Creek Road, about three miles north of town. According to authorities, Gough was behind the wheel of a 2014 Ford Fusion traveling westbound.

For reasons still under investigation, the car left the roadway. It veered off course and slammed into a tree. The impact was severe.
Moments later, the vehicle caught fire. By the time help arrived, the scene was already devastating.
Gough was pronounced dead at the scene. There were no passengers inside the car. No other vehicles were involved.
The Kansas Highway Patrol confirmed that this was a single-vehicle crash. No additional injuries were reported.
Investigators are still working to determine what caused the car to leave the road. For now, a family in Joplin is grieving, and a community is left with questions about how a routine drive ended in such sudden loss.
