Fairfax County, Virginia saw a chilling turn on Interstate 495 Sunday afternoon when Michele Adams, 39, lost her life in a sudden road rage attack that also left three other women seriously wounded. The violence unfolded just after 1:15 p.m. near Exit 52 on the southbound Beltway, transforming a routine afternoon drive into a nightmare for travelers and good Samaritans alike.
Witnesses say the trouble began with a minor crash in the traffic lanes. Before anyone could make sense of what was happening, a man identified by police as 32‑year‑old Jared Llamado of McLean suddenly began stabbing a group of women who had pulled over after the crash. One of the victims, Adams, was struck repeatedly and later died of her injuries at a hospital. Three other women, aged 36, 37 and 40, were also stabbed and rushed to nearby trauma centers with serious wounds.

People on the highway describe the scene as chaotic and terrifying. Drivers said Llamado seemed agitated, weaving through traffic before exiting his vehicle and attacking the victims without hesitation. Some who halted to help found themselves fleeing for safety as the violence erupted on the shoulder of the busy interstate. None of the women, officials later confirmed, were known to him before that afternoon.
Amid the chaos, Llamado’s own dog was also stabbed and killed at the scene in a grim detail that added to an already shocking tableau. The brutal attacks drew frantic 911 calls from motorists who believed a mass casualty event was unfolding. Within minutes, a Virginia State Police trooper responding to the reports encountered Llamado carrying a knife. In the sudden confrontation, the trooper fired his weapon, striking Llamado. The suspect was taken to a hospital where he later died from his wounds, authorities said.
State police have stressed that they do not believe the attack was tied to terrorism. The trooper who fired his weapon has been placed on routine administrative leave, standard procedure in officer‑involved shootings while investigations continue into the precise motives and sequence of events. The highway was closed for hours as investigators combed the scene and interviewed witnesses.
Friends and family members of one of the surviving victims have since rallied to support her recovery, describing the lasting emotional impact of a terrified afternoon on what most expected to be an ordinary drive. As the injured women undergo treatment, the community has been left to grapple with the senseless loss of life on one of the region’s busiest roads.
Officials continue to piece together what led a simple crash to spiral into deadly violence, offering condolences to the victims’ loved ones and urging anyone with information to come forward as the investigation evolves.
