CORPUS CHRISTI Shooting Leaves Man Dead, Officers Hurt in Westside Chaos

Corpus Christi, Texas — A quiet afternoon on the city’s westside turned deadly when gunfire erupted Friday, leaving 39‑year‑old Daniel Suarez dead and two Corpus Christi police officers wounded, authorities confirmed. What began as a homicide call shifted into a dangerous confrontation that has shaken the community.

Police say officers responded around 2:47 p.m. to the 4900 block of Ayers Street after reports of gunshots. When they arrived, they found Suarez suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency crews rushed him to a hospital, but he died from his injuries, the medical examiner confirmed.

Less than an hour later, Corpus Christi Police located a vehicle linked to the shooting on the 3100 block of Agnes Street. As officers attempted to detain the vehicle’s occupant, 38‑year‑old Ricardo Rojas, police report he produced a weapon and opened fire. Officers returned fire, striking Rojas and taking him into custody.

The exchange didn’t end there. Two officers were hit by gunfire during the confrontation and were transported to a local hospital. A third officer was treated at the scene for injuries from flying debris. Officials say one of the wounded officers has since been released, while the other remains hospitalized.

Senior Officer Alexandria “Alley” Cano‑Castro was identified through a community fundraiser as one of the injured officers and is said to be on a long road to recovery, with support efforts underway.

Rojas now faces multiple charges, including murder and attempted capital murder, according to court filings. Records show he has a long criminal history and several probation violations leading up to the deadly Friday encounter.

Police have placed the officers involved on paid administrative leave while the investigation continues. Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact the Corpus Christi Police Department or Crime Stoppers.

This incident has left residents and law enforcement grappling with grief and concern, as the city processes the loss of Suarez and the injuries to officers who were simply trying to serve and protect.
