LAFAYETTE — Irving Lumpkin III, 22, was found shot and killed in the parking lot of the Grand Pointe Apartments early Wednesday morning. Officers with the Lafayette Police Department were called to the complex on Kaliste Saloom Road just after 6:30 a.m. and discovered Lumpkin unresponsive beside his vehicle. The medical examiner later confirmed his death at the scene.
Friends and family described Irving as a young man full of life who lit up every room he walked into. He loved being around his siblings and cousins, and he had plans that reached far beyond his years. Those who knew him said he had a quick laugh and made people feel seen when they were around him.

The police have not released a motive or identified a suspect, leaving many in the community searching for answers. Investigators are still working to piece together what happened in that quiet part of Lafayette early in the morning. Residents nearby said they were startled awake by the sound of gunfire.
Neighbors at the complex said they rarely heard trouble in the area and never expected violence right outside their front doors. Many described the spot as a place they felt safe pulling into after a long day. Now they say that sense of security feels shaken.
Irving’s family gathered with close friends later that afternoon to share memories and lean on each other. They spoke softly about his favorite foods, his love for music, and the jokes he would crack without warning. They said remembering his smile has been a comfort amid the shock.
Police are asking anyone with information about the shooting to reach out, saying even small details could help. While detectives follow up on tips, the community remains on edge, hoping for progress soon.
Those who knew Irving say they will remember him not for the way he died but for the way he lived — generous, warm, and always ready with a laugh. The investigation continues as Lafayette mourns the loss of a young man taken far too soon.
