With deep sorrow and heavy hearts, family, friends, and the whole Narragansett community are mourning the sudden loss of Jordan S. Monroe. The 25-year-old from Narragansett, Rhode Island, died on Sunday, July 5, 2026, after a simple fishing trip on School House Pond turned tragic.
Jordan and another man were out in a fiberglass canoe about 100 yards from shore when it flipped over. The other guy managed to swim back to safety, but Jordan went under while trying to reach land and didn’t come back up. First responders from Charlestown Police, Rescue, and Fire rushed to the scene around 1:38 p.m. after getting the call about a possible drowning on Narragansett Indian Tribal property.

A big search kicked in right away with help from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Rhode Island DEM Environmental Police. They found Jordan a good distance offshore. Crews tried life-saving measures on the spot before rushing him by ambulance to Westerly Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. No life jackets were on either man, and the canoe had no flotation devices at all.
Officials pointed out that School House Pond Beach is a swim-at-your-own-risk spot, a popular freshwater area but one that demands extra caution. Jordan’s loved ones are now left with memories of a kind young man who enjoyed being outdoors and spending time with people he cared about
