A calm Friday night in Rockdale, Texas, broke apart in seconds when gunfire rang out inside a local bar, leaving a young man in critical condition and a community shaken. What started as a regular night out quickly turned into a life-or-death emergency that drew police, medics, and stunned witnesses into a scene they won’t forget.
It was just before midnight, around 11:51 p.m. on April 17, when the first desperate calls hit 911. People inside Boogie’s Texas Bar & Grill on South Wilcox Street reported shots fired. The details were scattered and urgent. Someone had been hit. The shooter’s whereabouts were unclear. Panic filled the air as callers tried to make sense of what had just happened.
When officers arrived, they found 28-year-old Coby Ward lying inside the bar with a gunshot wound. The situation was critical from the start. First responders worked quickly to stabilize him before arranging emergency air transport. Ward, who is from Sallisaw, Oklahoma, was flown by helicopter to Baylor Scott & White Hospital in Temple, Texas.
Doctors are still fighting to save his life. Authorities say he remains in critical condition. For family and friends, the hours since the shooting have been heavy with worry, as they wait for any sign of improvement.
