Campbell County’s Barry Anthony Killed After Hyundai Overturns on Waterlick Road

A quiet stretch of road in Campbell County turned deadly Tuesday morning after a single-vehicle crash claimed the life of a Lynch Station man, leaving neighbors shaken and investigators searching for answers.

Virginia State Police said the crash happened around 7:52 a.m. along Waterlick Road, roughly a mile west of Lawyers Road. Troopers and emergency crews rushed to the area after receiving reports of a serious wreck involving a passenger vehicle that had gone off the roadway.

When first responders arrived, they found a badly damaged 2014 Hyundai Elantra overturned near the roadway. Authorities later identified the driver as 57-year-old Barry Eugene Anthony of Lynch Station.

Investigators said Anthony was ejected from the vehicle during the crash. Despite emergency response efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene from severe injuries suffered in the rollover.

According to state police, the Hyundai traveled off the roadway for reasons that are still unclear before overturning. Troopers continue working to determine exactly what caused the vehicle to leave the road and whether speed, road conditions, or other contributing factors played a role in the deadly wreck.

Officials also confirmed that Anthony was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. Authorities noted that seatbelt use remains one of the biggest factors in surviving rollover accidents, where occupants can easily be thrown from a vehicle during impact.

The tragedy has once again renewed conversations across rural Virginia communities about roadway safety and the dangers drivers face on narrow back roads during the early morning hours. Waterlick Road, like many secondary roads in the region, can present challenges with curves, uneven shoulders, and changing conditions.

As the investigation continues, Virginia State Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash or noticed unusual driving activity in the area Tuesday morning to come forward. Troopers say every detail matters as they work to piece together the final moments leading up to the fatal crash.
