Cottons Road in Lincoln became the quiet backdrop for a sudden and heartbreaking loss early Thursday morning. At about 7:40 a.m., 33‑year‑old Clayton Wood of Chittenango was driving his 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander east on a curve when something went terribly wrong. His vehicle left the road, crossed into the opposite lane, and struck a large tree. Clayton was alone in the car. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Deputies from the Madison County Sheriff’s Office say Clayton’s vehicle veered out of its lane on the curve. Early signs from the investigation point to improper lane usage as a contributing factor. Emergency responders also reported that he was not wearing a seatbelt when the crash happened.

The stretch of Cottons Road between Quarry Road and Harp Road was closed for nearly three hours while investigators worked. Friends and neighbors watched as law enforcement pieced together the moments that led to such a sudden end to a young life.
In the wake of Clayton’s death, friends organized a GoFundMe titled “Support for Maizie and Brintz After Clayton’s Loss.” The fundraiser aimed to help his wife, Maizie, and their toddler son, Brintz, begin to cope with both emotional and financial burdens. Within a short time, more than 400 people had donated, and the total raised passed $50,000. Messages left by supporters reflected deep sympathy and shock at Clayton’s passing.
Those who knew Clayton remember a devoted family man. To them, he was a presence of steady love and warmth for his wife and son. The community’s outpouring on the fundraiser page showed how widely he was respected and how deeply his loss is felt.
As the sun set that evening in Lincoln, the quiet of Cottons Road stood in stark contrast to the ripple of sorrow moving through Chittenango. Family, friends, and neighbors now are left to carry memories and questions, and to rally around Maizie and young Brintz as they face life without Clayton.
