TULSA, Okla.: Andrey Nears killed after alleged family assault inside Avondale Apartments

Tulsa, Okla. — A quiet afternoon at the Avondale Apartments turned deadly on May 31, 2026, after a domestic disturbance escalated into a fatal shooting inside a unit near 67th Street and Utica Avenue.

Police say officers were called to the scene around 2 p.m. following reports of a firearm involved in a family altercation. The situation, according to investigators, unfolded quickly inside the apartment.

Authorities allege that 49-year-old Andrey Nears assaulted his wife and their 16-year-old son during the incident. The confrontation reportedly took place inside the home, where tensions had escalated.

Investigators say the teen was able to get access to a firearm inside the residence during the struggle. In response to the ongoing attack, the 16-year-old shot Nears.

When officers arrived, they found Nears suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after emergency responders made contact.

Police detained the juvenile for questioning. After being interviewed by investigators, the teen was later released pending a review by the Tulsa County District Attorney’s Office.

Officials say the case is still under active investigation. Detectives continue to gather statements and examine evidence to understand the full sequence of events.

The incident is recorded as Tulsa’s 21st homicide of 2026, according to police records.
