Huguley Fire Claims Donald Ray Gough and Angela Jean Gough in Late-Night Tragedy

A quiet stretch of Huguley turned into a scene of heartbreak late Monday night, when a house fire tore through a family home and claimed the lives of two residents. What started as an ordinary evening ended in loss that neighbors are still trying to understand.

Deputies with the Chambers County Sheriff’s Office say they were called out around 10:30 p.m. to a home on 20th Street SW after reports that the house was fully engulfed in flames. By the time first responders arrived, the fire had already taken hold of the structure, making it too dangerous to enter right away.

Firefighters from Huguley, Lanett, and across East Alabama rushed in to help. They worked through thick smoke and intense heat, doing everything they could to bring the flames under control and keep nearby homes from being affected. It was a long and difficult fight that stretched deep into the night.

Once crews finally knocked down the fire, the reality inside the home became clear. Authorities confirmed that two people had been found dead in the wreckage. They were later identified as 55-year-old Donald Ray Gough and 46-year-old Angela Jean Gough.

The loss has hit the community hard. Neighbors describe the couple as part of the fabric of the area, and now many are left struggling with the suddenness of it all. A normal Monday night turned into something no one saw coming.

Investigators say the cause of the fire is still unknown. The Alabama Fire Marshal’s Office is working alongside the Chambers County Sheriff’s Office to piece together what happened. For now, questions remain about how the blaze started and why it spread so quickly.

As that investigation continues, the focus in Huguley has shifted to mourning. Friends and loved ones are remembering Donald and Angela not for how they died, but for the lives they lived and the memories they leave behind.

In a place where nights are usually quiet, this tragedy has left a lasting mark. Two lives gone in a matter of moments, and a community left holding onto grief, searching for answers that have yet to come.
