Seventeen‑year‑old Kamari McNeil never made it home Monday afternoon after a burst of gunfire rattled the quiet Sunn Aire neighborhood in Wilmington.
Just before 3:30 p.m., neighbors heard shots in the 200 block of Sunn Aire Court. Wilmington police arrived to find McNeil unresponsive and suffering from gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene. A second person was also shot and taken to a hospital in serious condition.

Police quickly blocked off the area, canvassed for witnesses, and began piecing together what happened. So far, there’s no clear motive, no suspects in custody, and no indication what sparked the violence. Detectives are working through interviews and reviewing camera footage from around the neighborhood to try to answer those questions.
Kamari was a student at New Hanover High School. For classmates, teachers, and neighbors, his death came as an awful surprise. Friends remember him as the kind of kid who greeted people in the hallways and made others laugh with a quick joke. His absence on campus this week has left a silence that doesn’t feel right.
Family members have kept close to one another, leaning on shared memories of Kamari’s bright smile and easygoing nature. They talk about the plans he had for the future, the ordinary things that now feel painfully unfinished.
Police continue to ask anyone who saw something, heard something, or has information about what led up to the shooting to reach out. The community has rallied around the McNeil family, holding onto hope that someone will come forward and help bring some answers.
As night falls over Sunn Aire, residents are left holding onto memories of a young life cut short and searching for clarity in a case that has shaken them to the core.
