San Angelo saw a deadly turn of events outside the Northside Recreation Center when 19-year-old Isaiah Bailon was shot and killed during what investigators say started as an illegal firearm exchange. It happened on a Thursday afternoon that quickly spiraled into tragedy, leaving a community stunned.
Police say the call came in around 5:24 p.m. reporting shots fired near the recreation center grounds. When officers arrived, they found Bailon with gunshot wounds. Despite efforts at the scene, he was pronounced dead right there on the spot.

Investigators later pieced together that Bailon had met with 17-year-old Matthew Rodriguez shortly before the shooting. According to authorities, the two were involved in an illegal firearm transaction that went wrong in a matter of moments.
What began as a deal between the two teenagers reportedly escalated into gunfire. Police have not publicly detailed what triggered the shooting, but they confirmed the interaction between the two played a central role in the deadly outcome.
Detectives quickly identified Rodriguez as the suspect. He was taken into custody and formally charged with murder. He is now being held in the Tom Green County Jail with bond set at $1,000,000.
Law enforcement agencies worked together on the case, with the San Angelo Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division leading the effort. Several specialized units assisted, including the Gang Unit, Drone Unit, Narcotics Division, Special Operations Unit, K9 Unit, and Crime Scene Investigations.
Officials say the investigation is still active. Detectives continue to review evidence, including witness statements and forensic findings, as they try to fully reconstruct how the confrontation unfolded.
For many in San Angelo, the incident has added another layer of concern about youth violence and illegal firearm activity, especially in public spaces meant for recreation and safety.
