SAN ANGELO, Texas — Jason Ward, 52, a well‑known local father and neighbor, died Wednesday night after a rear‑end crash on U.S. 87 that left his SUV mangled and the community in shock. The wreck happened just before 8 p.m. near Fairview School Road, where Ward’s Chevrolet Trax plowed into the back of another SUV in the clear, dry conditions.
According to early reports from authorities, Ward was driving north on U.S. 87 when he could not slow down in time and hit the back of a 2017 GMC Terrain. Emergency crews pronounced him dead at the scene, and law enforcement later noted he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the impact.

The driver of the GMC, a 34‑year‑old San Angelo resident, walked away with minor injuries. He was wearing his seatbelt and later treated at Shannon Medical Center. Friends say he was shaken but grateful to be alive.
People who knew Ward described him as easygoing, always ready with a kind word for neighbors. His loss quickly became the main topic of conversation in the community Thursday morning, where residents mourned a life cut short on a quiet stretch of highway.
Investigators believe speed and failure to control the vehicle were contributing factors. Roads were dry and the weather was clear, eliminating rain and poor visibility as causes. The Texas Department of Public Safety said its investigation continues, but early indications point to simple human error.
Family members have yet to announce funeral arrangements, but friends say memorial plans are underway. In the meantime, local drivers are being reminded to keep safe distances and buckle up.
