Jaelen McCormick had his entire life ahead of him. At just 20 years old, he had so much left to see and do. But all of that was stolen away in a single split second early Tuesday morning. A casual night out at a local gathering ended up being his last.
The whole thing went down right outside the S&D Banquet Hall. The venue sits near University City Boulevard and East W.T. Harris Boulevard in northeast Charlotte. People were inside enjoying an event, expecting a normal night of fun and celebration. No one saw the danger coming.

Just after 1 a.m., the peace was shattered by loud gunshots ringing out through the night air. Someone called the cops right away to report the gunfire. When Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers rushed to the scene, they found a heartbreaking sight. Jaelen was lying outside the hall, suffering badly from a fresh gunshot wound.
Emergency responders moved fast to try and save the young man’s life. They loaded Jaelen into an ambulance and rushed him straight to a nearby hospital. Tragically, his injuries were just too severe. He passed away shortly after arriving, leaving a community completely devastated.
Detectives are now trying to piece together exactly what went wrong. A police major mentioned that some sort of argument or dispute happened before the trigger was pulled. Witnesses say attendees from the event were involved. It is terrifying to think that a simple disagreement could lead to a fatal shooting.
Friends and locals are struggling to understand how a regular weeknight could turn so violent. Twenty is far too young to die over a random dispute outside a party. The shockwaves from Jaelen’s sudden death are being felt all across the neighborhood.
Right now, the people who loved Jaelen are left waiting for answers. The authorities are begging anyone who knows anything to step forward and speak up. Homicide detectives can be reached at 704-432-TIPS, or people can leave tips anonymously with Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
