A regular Sunday afternoon family gathering turned into every parent’s absolute worst nightmare. Seven-year-old Harbe Nagi was visiting friends with his mother in Menands when he suddenly vanished. The little boy wandered away from a festive graduation party on Park Place around 4:20 p.m.
Harbe was a bright and energetic child who brought immense light into his family’s life. He also had autism and was completely nonverbal. Because he was barefoot and unable to speak or call out for help, his family panicked immediately and called 911, sparking a massive local response.

The heartbreak stretched far beyond New York state lines all the way to Michigan. Harbe’s uncle is Adam Alharbi, the mayor of Hamtramck, Michigan. The mayor joined the family in desperate social media pleas, sharing his young nephew’s photo and begging anyone in the Capital Region to keep their eyes peeled.
Local neighbors and complete strangers immediately stepped up to help the family. Thousands of people across the region shared the missing person alerts online within hours. Volunteers joined hands with local police to comb through thick woods and nearby properties, refusing to sleep as the search went straight through the night.
First responders pulled out every single stop to find the sweet boy safely. Officers even drove an ice cream truck down the local residential streets, playing its familiar jingle. They hoped the joyful music would comfort Harbe and draw him out if he was scared and hiding nearby.
Sadly, the intensive two-day search ended in absolute heartbreak on Tuesday morning. Authorities confirmed that they found Harbe deceased near Park Avenue. An emotional family member was seen running toward first responders as the devastating news broke across the neighborhood.
Now, a tight-knit community is left grieving a young life taken far too soon. The Menands Police Department extended its deepest condolences to everyone who knew and loved Harbe. Investigators are still looking into exactly what happened, but the town is focused on wrapping its arms around a shattered family.
