ANDERSON: Montario Peoples killed in early-morning shooting outside Bourbon Street

Montario D. Peoples, 34, died early Easter Sunday after being shot while seated in a vehicle outside Bourbon Street Sports Bar & Grill on the 800 block of East 53rd Street. First responders arrived after a 2:43 a.m. report and found Peoples suffering multiple gunshot wounds; Madison County Coroner Adam Matson ruled the cause of death multiple gunshot injuries.

A woman who was with Peoples was also struck and rushed to a local hospital; authorities later described her wounds as non-life-threatening. Other occupants were unhurt. Police investigators say several rounds were fired into the car from outside and are treating the shooting as an ambush on the vehicle.

Detectives with the Anderson Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division have opened a full investigation and are pursuing leads, canvassing nearby businesses for video and asking witnesses to step forward or contact Crime Stoppers anonymously.

Friends and loved ones remembered Peoples with shock and sorrow, posting condolences and sharing memories of his life. The loss landed heavily on the local community, where people gathered to talk about how sudden and senseless the killing felt.

The scene on East 53rd Street was secured for hours while evidence was collected and investigators worked to reconstruct what happened. No suspect information or arrests were announced as authorities continue piecing together the timeline.

Officials urged anyone with tips or footage to contact police immediately; investigators said even small bits of information could be critical. The coroner and police pledged to release verified details as the investigation advances.

Photographs from the scene show investigators and emergency crews at the location; memorial messages for Peoples began circulating online as family and community members processed the tragedy.
