Madison County: Rosine Kabano and Kenrik Kabano Killed in I-45 Crash Near Madisonville

Madison County: A mother and son, Rosine Kabano, 44, and her 16-year-old son Kenrik Kabano, lost their lives in a violent crash on Interstate 45 near Madisonville on Monday night. The tragedy has left their family and community in deep shock and grief.

Rosine was driving southbound on I-45 near the 140-mile marker, just south of Highway 21. Kenrik was seated in the back of the 2026 Mitsubishi Eclipse they were traveling in. Reports indicate she was moving along the right shoulder of the interstate for reasons that are still unclear.

As she approached an Emergency Vehicle Only crossover, she attempted to cross the main lanes of the highway. In that brief moment, a 2023 Chevrolet pickup truck pulling a utility trailer struck the vehicle with heavy force.

The impact was severe. Rosine suffered critical injuries and was rushed by air medical transport to CHI St. Joseph Health in Bryan. Despite medical efforts, she was later pronounced dead.

Kenrik did not survive the crash. He was pronounced dead at the scene before emergency crews could move him. The driver and passenger in the pickup truck were not injured.

Authorities with the Texas Department of Public Safety are still investigating the exact circumstances of the crash. The southbound lanes of I-45 were shut down for several hours as responders worked the scene and cleared debris.

Family members have begun mourning a double loss that feels impossible to process. Kenrik is being remembered as a bright teenager with strong promise, especially known for his love and talent in basketball, carrying dreams that were cut short far too soon.

Rosine and Kenrik Kabano are now remembered as a mother and son bound closely in life and lost together in tragedy. Their passing has left a deep void in the hearts of those who knew them, and their story continues to echo through a grieving community.
