Ayden Hager, York: The Unexpected Passing of a Beloved 21-Year-Old Diesel Mechanic Leaves a Close-Knit Nebraska Town in Deep Mourning

The small town of York, Nebraska is dealing with a heavy cloud of grief this week. A bright and joyful local soul, Ayden James Hager, passed away completely unexpectedly on Wednesday, July 1, 2026. He was only 21 years old. The sudden loss has left a massive hole in the hearts of his family, his friends, and the entire neighborhood. Folks around town are struggling to process the news of a young life cut so short.

Ayden came into this world on July 6, 2004, in the nearby town of Seward, Nebraska. He was born to Mindy Hager and James Nichelson. Right from the start, he brought an infectious joy and a vibrant spirit to everyone around him. He grew up learning the value of kindness and developed a genuine love for helping people. His easy smile could brighten up the darkest room in a matter of seconds.

As he grew up, Ayden turned out to be a real-world fixer who loved working with his hands. He graduated from York High School with the tight-knit Class of 2023. After that, he decided to follow his true calling by enrolling in the Diesel Technology program at Southeast Community College in Milford. He wrapped up his degree there in 2025, ready to make his mark on the world.

Ayden was a true gearhead through and through. He landed a job at Freedom Repair Motorsports right here in York, where he spent his days doing what he loved most. If your truck was acting up or your engine needed a complete overhaul, Ayden was the go-to guy everyone called. He had a natural talent for building cars and fixing anything with a motor.

When he was not under the hood of a car, Ayden was out enjoying the great Nebraska outdoors. He had a massive passion for hunting, racing, and spending quiet moments with his beloved pets. He absolutely cherished his dogs and cats, treating them like family. He lived his life with a beautiful, raw energy that inspired his buddies to live every single moment to the absolute fullest.

Ayden leaves behind a loving family that will cherish his memory forever. He is survived by his beloved mother, Mindy Hager, whose incredible strength has been a guiding light for the family during this dark time. He also leaves behind his sister, Emma Hager, his young niece, Isobel, and a wide circle of aunts, uncles, and cousins who loved him dearly. He was preceded in death by his father, James Nichelson.

The community is now preparing to say their final goodbyes to a young man who gave so much love in such a short time. A memorial service is officially scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, at the Metz Chapel in York, Nebraska. Reverend Matthew Mau will be officiating the service. There will be no traditional viewing because Ayden has been cremated, but the chapel doors will be wide open for folks to share stories, shed tears, and celebrate a beautiful life.
