The quiet stretch of Sullivant Avenue on Columbus’ west side turned into a scene of tragedy late Tuesday night when Dion Anthony Carter, a man remembered by neighbors as a dependable worker and friendly face, lost his life after a stabbing that police say unfolded just before midnight.
Officers with the Columbus Division of Police were called to the 1700 block of Sullivant Avenue at about 11:47 p.m. on March 10, 2026. Dispatchers had received reports of a stabbing in the area. When officers arrived, they found Carter suffering from at least one stab wound. Emergency responders rushed him to a nearby hospital, but despite efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Investigators say the suspected attacker, 63-year-old James Jacobs, was located a short distance away from the scene and taken into custody. Authorities later confirmed that Jacobs has been charged with murder and is currently being held at the Franklin County Jail as the investigation moves forward.
For many who live near the apartment complex where the violence occurred, the loss of Carter is difficult to process. Residents say he worked as a maintenance man at the property and was often seen fixing things around the building, helping tenants, and keeping the place running smoothly. Several neighbors described him as a steady presence who took pride in his work and treated people with respect.
Some witnesses told investigators the confrontation may have grown out of a dispute related to a maintenance issue at the complex. Police, however, have not officially confirmed what led to the stabbing. Detectives say they are still working to piece together the moments leading up to the deadly encounter.
The area along Sullivant Avenue, located in Columbus’ Hilltop neighborhood, is a busy corridor lined with apartment buildings, small businesses, and homes. News of the killing spread quickly among residents, many of whom woke Wednesday morning to flashing police lights and crime scene tape.
For friends and family, the loss of Dion Anthony Carter leaves a deep wound. People who knew him say he was a hardworking man who believed in showing up for his community and helping others whenever he could.
As the investigation continues, the community is left grappling with the shock of what happened. In the days ahead, neighbors say they plan to remember Carter not for the violence that ended his life, but for the quiet acts of kindness and dedication that defined how he lived.
