LUKE PETERSON, Glenwood: sudden loss of young baseball player shakes school community

Luke Peterson, a seventh-grade baseball player at Glenwood Middle School, has died in what those close to him are calling a sudden and tragic loss that has left a tight-knit school community in shock.

Glenwood Baseball confirmed the news in a social media statement released Monday, saying Peterson made a clear impact on the middle school team during the fall season. The program described him as a young player with strong promise and a future that felt wide open.

The message also asked people to keep his family in their thoughts and prayers as they go through what it called a time of deep grief. It ended with a simple tribute that read, “Forever in our hearts Lukey P #13.”

At Lakeside Christian Church in Chatham, staff said they were heartbroken by the news. The church opened its doors Tuesday morning, offering space for prayer and quiet support for anyone affected by the loss.

People who knew Peterson through travel baseball at Tribe Baseball and Softball Academy also shared their grief. He played on the Tribe 13U team, where coaches and teammates remembered him as a dependable teammate and someone who brought energy to the field.

The academy described his passing as a profound loss, noting that he was more than just a player. They said he was a friend and a “brother” to many of his teammates, both on and off the field.

As of Tuesday, authorities had not released any details about the circumstances surrounding his death, leaving many questions unanswered as the community continues to mourn.
