Caroline Powell, Marion County: Correctional Officer Dies Driving to Work Before Sunrise

The drive to work was supposed to be routine for Caroline Powell. Instead, it became the final trip of her life.

Powell, a correctional officer at the Marion County Regional Correctional Facility in Columbia, Mississippi, died Tuesday morning after a devastating crash while heading in for her shift. The loss shook co-workers, family members, and people across the community who knew her as a hard-working woman devoted to both her job and her family.

According to officials, the crash happened early May 26 while Powell was traveling toward the correctional facility. Mississippi Highway Patrol later confirmed the wreck involved two vehicles near U.S. Highway 98 in Marion County shortly before 5:45 a.m. Authorities said Powell’s SUV collided with a pickup truck after entering the highway from Lampton Hilltop Road.

Powell suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The other driver was reportedly taken to a hospital with moderate injuries. Investigators have not released further details as the investigation continues.

Inside the correctional facility, the grief hit hard. In a public statement, officials described Powell as someone who truly cared about serving her community. Co-workers said she loved her job and carried herself with pride every day she came to work. The facility called her a dedicated officer whose absence will be deeply felt by everybody who worked beside her.

But outside the uniform, Powell was also a mother, a loved one, and the center of a family now facing an unimaginable loss. One emotional message from a relative asked the public to pray especially for her two young children. The words quickly spread online as friends and loved ones struggled to process the tragedy.

People who knew Powell described her as dependable and kindhearted. For many, the hardest part is knowing her day began like any other. She got in the car, headed to work, and never made it there. It is the kind of heartbreak that leaves a community stunned because it feels so painfully ordinary and sudden at the same time.

At the Marion County Regional Correctional Facility, fellow officers are now mourning one of their own. In a profession already filled with stress and sacrifice, losing a co-worker on the way to work has left many shaken. Messages of support and prayers have continued pouring in for Powell’s children, relatives, and the staff members who worked alongside her every day.
