For years, riding MARTA was simply part of Margaret Swan’s daily life.
The 66-year-old Atlanta retiree never learned to drive. Instead, she relied on the city’s transit system to get wherever she needed to go. Her daughter, Shanae Sams, said Swan knew the train routes well and used them regularly without concern.

But what should have been an ordinary trip home on Saturday turned into a tragedy that has left an entire family devastated.
Investigators say Swan was sitting alone aboard a MARTA train near Oakland City Station when she became the victim of a shocking and completely unprovoked attack. Surveillance footage reviewed by authorities reportedly showed no interaction between Swan and the man accused of killing her.
According to police, 25-year-old John Elijah Matthews boarded the train shortly before the attack. Video footage allegedly shows him walking toward Swan, standing beside her for a few moments, and then suddenly pulling out a knife. Authorities say he cut her throat before stabbing her between 18 and 20 times as she screamed and struggled to escape.
Police said the attack lasted less than two minutes. Investigators allege Matthews held Swan during the assault, then threw her to the floor of the train and remained nearby until the train arrived at Oakland City Station. Officers quickly took him into custody, and he now faces murder charges.
The violence has stunned Atlanta commuters and deeply shaken Swan’s loved ones. Family members say she was a caring woman whose life revolved around the people she loved most. They describe her as kind, dependable, and always willing to help anyone in need.
“My mom was the rock of her family,” her daughter said. “There was nothing she wouldn’t do for her family because her family was her everything.”
Swan leaves behind three children, five grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Those closest to her say she was the foundation that held the family together, a woman whose warmth and generosity touched everyone around her.
As the criminal case moves forward, her family is left trying to cope with a loss that feels impossible to understand. What began as a normal ride home ended with the death of a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother whose family says she never hurt anyone and always treated others with kindness.
