Investigators say a 2015 Subaru Forester, driven by Nevells, was heading north when it crossed the center line for reasons still unclear. The Subaru slammed into two southbound vehicles, a 2018 Honda Fit and a 2024 Ram 2500, triggering a chain reaction that left debris scattered across Blue Hill Road.

Nevells suffered catastrophic injuries in the impact. First responders tried to help, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. The loss was immediate and devastating, according to officials familiar with the response.

The drivers of the Honda Fit and the Ram truck were taken to a local hospital. Police say they were treated for injuries that were not life-threatening and were later released. No other injuries were reported.

Maine State Police say the investigation is ongoing. Troopers are still working to determine why the Subaru crossed the center line. No charges or additional findings have been announced so far.

As word spread, grief settled heavily over Surry and Brooksville. Friends and neighbors described Mark Nevells as a familiar face and a valued part of the community. Many say it is hard to accept how suddenly his life ended on an ordinary afternoon drive.

Candles, quiet prayers, and shared memories now stand in place of answers. The community continues to mourn, holding close to one another while waiting for clarity from investigators.
