Waverly, Florida: David Durham Thrown From Motorcycle in Fatal Roadside Crash

Waverly, Florida woke up to heartbreak Saturday after 35-year-old David Durham lost his life in a violent motorcycle crash that unfolded on a quiet stretch of Waverly Road. The impact was sudden and unforgiving, leaving witnesses stunned and first responders racing against time.

According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, Durham was riding his motorcycle westbound on Waverly Road late in the morning. Investigators say his speed appeared to be above the posted 35-mile-per-hour limit as he approached the intersection near Hodge Street.

At the same moment, a woman driving a Toyota Highlander was heading eastbound on Waverly Road. As she turned onto Hodge Street, her SUV crossed directly into Durham’s path. The motorcycle slammed into the vehicle, sending Durham airborne in a split second.

Witnesses told deputies the force of the collision threw Durham from his bike. He landed roughly 75 feet away from the point of impact. Authorities later confirmed he was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, a detail that weighed heavily over the scene.

Bystanders rushed in to help. One person began CPR while first responders arrived and took over life-saving efforts. Durham was found unresponsive and was quickly transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital. Despite medical care, he later died from his injuries.

The driver of the Toyota Highlander and two passengers were also taken to the hospital. All three suffered minor injuries and were wearing seat belts, deputies said. None of their injuries were considered life-threatening, and they are expected to recover fully.

Investigators spent hours at the crash site, measuring distances, photographing debris, and documenting where each vehicle came to rest. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office says the investigation remains active, with deputies reviewing witness statements, possible traffic camera footage, and other evidence. The name of the SUV driver has not been released.

Motorcycle crashes have become an ongoing concern in Polk County, especially at intersections where drivers misjudge speed or fail to yield. Law enforcement continues to urge riders to wear protective gear and slow down, while reminding drivers to stay alert and cautious at crossings.

Durham’s family has been notified of his death. For now, they are left to grieve a loss that came without warning, on a road that looked like any other Saturday morning.
