ST. JAMES PARISH, Louisiana Boy Dies in Head‑on Crash, Family and Community Grieve

St. James Parish is grieving after a 5‑year‑old boy died in a head‑on collision late Saturday night. Little Demond Tenner lost his life in a crash on Louisiana Highway 3213 near Vacherie just before 10 p.m. on March 7, 2026.

State police say a southbound Hyundai crossed the center line while entering a curve and struck a northbound Chevrolet head‑on. The Hyundai burst into flames after the impact. Demond was in the back seat of the Chevrolet with family when the collision happened. He suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Demond’s family, friends and neighbors are heartbroken. Known for his bright smile and boundless energy, he was described as a joyful child who lit up every room he entered. Those who knew him say he loved to laugh and play, and that his happy spirit was infectious.

In the tight‑knit communities of Baker and Vacherie, condolences poured in the hours after the tragedy. Residents offered prayers, shared memories and brought meals to the grieving family. For many, the loss is incomprehensible — a young life ended far too soon and a family forever changed.

Local leaders have urged cautious driving on rural curves in the parish, but the focus remains squarely on supporting the Tenner family. Parents in the area are comforting one another, trying to make sense of how something so ordinary as an evening drive could end in such profound loss.

Friends held vigils and gathered at local parks and churches, lighting candles in Demond’s honor. Many recalled his laughter, his love for superheroes and how he never missed a chance to make someone smile. “That little boy had so much life in him,” one neighbor said. “He was pure joy.”

As the community comes together in mourning, Demond’s family has asked for privacy. They have also said they hope their son’s memory will remind others how precious and fragile life can be and to cherish every moment with loved ones.
