The Texas Panhandle community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Avery Detten, a Texas A&M University student from Hereford who died days after suffering devastating injuries in a serious car crash.
Avery passed away on May 26 after spending several days in intensive care at Northwest Texas Hospital in Amarillo. According to her family, the crash happened on May 21 and left the young student with a traumatic brain injury along with multiple life-threatening injuries.
Family members shared emotional updates throughout the week as doctors fought to keep her alive. They said Avery suffered severe brain swelling, a collapsed lung, a fractured pelvis and several broken bones. At one point, she was placed into a medically induced coma while doctors worked around the clock to reduce pressure on her brain and stabilize her condition.
Loved ones described the situation as a painful roller coaster. Early updates gave relatives and friends a small sense of hope after doctors said Avery was in critical but stable condition. She remained heavily sedated and on a ventilator while medical teams continued treatment inside the Amarillo hospital.
But by Tuesday, the family shared the news nobody wanted to hear. Jessica Detten announced that Avery had “left this earthly life,” ending days of prayers and emotional support from people across Hereford and beyond.
Even in death, Avery’s story left a powerful mark on many families. Her relatives revealed she was an organ donor, saying her “last earthly gift” could help as many as 65 people. That detail quickly touched hearts across social media, where friends, classmates and community members praised her kindness and selflessness.
People who knew Avery described her as bright, caring and deeply loved by those around her. The tragedy also sparked another wave of support for the Detten family, with many offering prayers, meals and messages during one of the hardest weeks of their lives.
