Isabella Star Vigil, Santa Maria: Five Teens Killed After Overnight Crash Shakes Community

A quiet weekend in Santa Maria turned into heartbreak after a devastating crash claimed the lives of five young people early Sunday morning.

Authorities identified the victims as Isabella Star Vigil, 16, Nicolas Munoz-Gautreaux, 17, Jennifer Gutierrez, 19, Guendi Beatrice Gamez Escalante, 16, and Yusbeli Diaz Galvez, 17. The group was riding together in a single vehicle when tragedy struck around 1:40 a.m. at the intersection of South Broadway and Miller Street.

Investigators said the vehicle was traveling along Broadway when it left the roadway and slammed into a traffic signal pole. The impact was so severe that four occupants died at the scene. A fifth victim later died after being taken to Marian Regional Medical Center.

A sixth occupant, identified as 24-year-old Aurelio Calixtro Matias, survived the crash and remained in critical condition at the hospital. Police said the investigation is still ongoing as officers work to determine exactly what happened in the moments before the collision.

According to investigators, preliminary evidence suggests that speed and alcohol may have played a role in the crash. However, authorities stressed that no final conclusions have been reached and that the case remains under active investigation.

The loss has been especially painful for the Santa Maria community because several of the victims attended local high schools. School officials quickly made counseling services available to students, teachers, and families struggling to process the sudden deaths.

Friends and relatives have remembered the victims as young people with bright futures, strong family connections, and dreams that were cut short far too soon. In the days following the crash, flowers, candles, balloons, and photographs appeared near the crash site as community members gathered to mourn.

Fundraising efforts have also been launched to help families with funeral and memorial expenses. As loved ones continue to grieve, many are searching for answers while remembering the lives behind the headlines.

For now, Santa Maria remains united in sorrow as five families face an unimaginable loss and a community struggles to come to terms with one of its deadliest recent crashes.
