Hickory Morning Turns Deadly as James Thompson Dies After Porch Shooting Incident

HICKORY, North Carolina — A quiet Friday morning turned into heartbreak for a tight‑knit neighborhood when 64‑year‑old James Andrew Thompson was shot and killed in a police‑involved shooting outside his home on 5th Street SE.
It all began just before 8:35 a.m. when Thompson’s wife called 911 in distress. She told the dispatcher her husband had a gun and was talking about hurting himself. Her voice trembled as she begged for help.

Before help arrived, neighbors began calling 911 too. They reported Thompson standing on his front porch, firing his weapon at cars driving down the street. One man driving by was hit by gunfire and rushed to a hospital. His condition is stable, but the shock of the moment still lingers in the community.

Hickory police officers were the first on scene. When they approached Thompson, he was still seated on the porch with the handgun in his hand. Officers repeatedly shouted commands for him to drop the weapon. Instead, Thompson lifted the gun toward them.

Faced with what they perceived as an immediate threat, officers fired back. Thompson fell and, despite attempts to save him, was pronounced dead at the scene by Catawba County EMS. The street where he lived was filled with the sound of sirens and the stunned silence that followed.

Friends and family described Thompson as a gentle man who had been struggling. His sudden death has left loved ones reeling, struggling to understand how a routine call for help turned into tragedy. The community has come together in quiet grief, lighting candles and sharing stories of a man they knew in happier times.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation has taken lead of the case to ensure an independent review. The officers involved have been placed on administrative leave, a standard step in shootings involving law enforcement. Neighbors are still talking about what happened, urging calm but demanding answers as the investigation unfolds.

Through the sadness, local leaders stress the urgency of crisis intervention and better support for people in mental distress. Thompson’s death stands as a painful reminder of how quickly domestic struggles can escalate into life‑altering events for a whole community.
