High Point woke up Wednesday to the kind of news no community ever wants to hear. Around 3 a.m., 22‑year‑old Jonal N. Hodge was found shot multiple times inside a vehicle at the Oaks at Silver Ridge apartment complex on East Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. Officers who rushed to the scene say she was already seriously wounded when they arrived. Paramedics took her to a local hospital where she died from her injuries, leaving friends and family stunned and grieving.
People who were near the scene told police that Hodge’s boyfriend walked up to the car and started shooting. It all happened so fast and so quietly in the early hours that the reality of it didn’t settle in for many until the morning light broke across the parking lot.

Hours later, the story took another tragic turn. Shortly before dawn, police responded to a report of a suspicious man inside a shed on Hendrix Street. When officers approached, they heard a single gunshot. Inside, they found 34‑year‑old Adrin K. Rome of Edenton suffering from what appeared to be a self‑inflicted wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators later confirmed Rome was the same person witnesses had pointed to in the earlier shooting. With both Hodge and Rome dead, authorities say they are not looking for any other suspects in the case.
Friends and family describe Hodge as a bright, young woman whose life was full of promise. Those who knew her talk about her smile, her laughter and the warmth she shared with the people closest to her. Her sudden death has left a void in the lives of many who loved her.
The shooting marks only the second criminal homicide recorded in High Point this year, raising concern among residents about domestic violence and how it can escalate so quickly with devastating consequences. Community members say they want better awareness and support for people in troubled relationships before things turn deadly.
Now, as the city tries to make sense of the tragedy, people are left remembering a young life cut short and the pain felt by everyone who knew her.
