Bardstown, Kentucky — Tech. Sgt. Ashley B. Pruitt, 34, was killed March 12 when the U.S. refueling tanker she was aboard crashed in western Iraq. Friends, neighbors and strangers have rallied around her husband and two young children, pouring more than $60,000 into a GoFundMe to help the family left behind.
Pruitt was one of six airmen who died when their KC‑135 Stratotanker went down while supporting operations overseas. She grew up in Bardstown, lived there with her husband, their 3‑year‑old daughter Emilia and her stepson Oliver. People who knew her describe a devoted mother and dedicated airman who cared deeply about both her family and her work.

Those close to Pruitt say she joined the U.S. Air Force in 2017 and threw herself into her duties with pride. At the 6th Air Refueling Wing based out of MacDill Air Force Base in Florida she became known for steady work and quiet strength. Her loss hit colleagues hard, leaving a gap that fellow airmen struggle to put into words.
Pamala Elsaesser, who started the GoFundMe “Support for Ashley Pruitt’s Family,” wrote that Pruitt worked tirelessly for the life she built with her loved ones. In her message, Elsaesser said the death leaves “an unimaginable hole” for all who knew the airman. The fundraiser aimed for $90,000 to cover immediate needs for the family, and donors continue to give.
Local leaders have echoed that sentiment. Officials in Bardstown and across Kentucky praised Pruitt’s service, calling her death the ultimate sacrifice. Many say the community will remember her not just for her uniform but for her warmth, generosity and the joy she found in her children.
Neighbors have made meals, shared memories and looked for ways to support the young family through sudden and profound loss. Emilia and Oliver are now being comforted by family members who say Pruitt’s love will shape their lives forever. The crash has reminded many of the risks service members take far from home.
In a city known for its close‑knit community, Pruitt’s loss has left a deep mark. Her story has united friends and strangers alike, and in every message of support there’s a refrain: she lived with purpose and gave everything for those she loved.
