The quiet stretch of Interstate 10 on San Antonio’s west side turned tragic before sunrise Sunday, when 47-year-old Russell Barbee lost his life in a violent rollover crash that left a community shaken and searching for answers.
Police say the crash happened just before 3 a.m. along the southbound lanes in the 19100 block of I-10 West. Barbee was driving a gray Ford Expedition when, for reasons still under investigation, the vehicle struck a barrier on the right side of the highway. The impact forced the SUV to flip, eventually coming to rest in the middle of the roadway.

First responders arrived to find the wreckage scattered across the lanes. Barbee had suffered severe, life-threatening injuries. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but despite efforts to save him, he was later pronounced dead.
Hours later, the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed his identity. Officials said the exact cause and manner of his death remain under review, pending a full autopsy.
Beyond the crash scene, the loss hit deeply in local schools and homes. Barbee was known as the assistant band director at Dobie Junior High, where students and staff describe him as a steady presence with a passion for music and mentorship. His work extended beyond the classroom, shaping young musicians and building lasting relationships.
The Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City Independent School District acknowledged the loss in a statement, asking for prayers and support for Barbee’s family. His wife, Stacey, works within the district as an athletic secretary and is also a musician. Together, they were raising two young boys.
Friends and colleagues say the family’s connection to the school community makes the loss even more personal. In band rooms and hallways, the silence left behind is hard to ignore.
Police continue to investigate the crash. No other vehicles were involved, and authorities have not released details about speed, impairment, or contributing factors.
