PAWTUCKET, R.I. — Shooter’s Family Dispute Unfolds at Youth Hockey Game; Community in Shock

PAWTUCKET, Rhode Island — A quiet afternoon at Dennis M. Lynch Arena turned into a scene of crisis and grief Monday when a father’s dispute with his own family exploded into violence during a high school hockey game.

About 2:30 p.m., shots broke the usual hum of a Senior Night crowd gathered for a game between Coventry–Johnston and Blackstone Valley Schools. Spectators initially thought the loud noises were part of the energetic rink atmosphere, but within moments players and parents realized gunfire was tearing through the stands.

Police later confirmed three people were dead, including the suspected shooter, who died from what appeared to be a self-inflicted wound. Two of the deceased were adult family members of the gunman. Three more relatives were critically wounded and taken to Rhode Island Hospital.

Investigators described the incident as rooted in a family dispute and said it was isolated, with no threat to the wider public. The sudden violence stunned everyone on site. Witnesses spoke of doors slamming and children sprinting away from danger as adults tried to shield them.

As first responders worked to secure the area and tend to the injured, parents and siblings huddled outside the arena. A father in the crowd made a courageous attempt to disarm the attacker, though the suspect was reported to have a second weapon. Amid sirens and police radios, crowds were evacuated and students were reunited with families using buses.

Officials made clear that the students playing hockey that day were unharmed. Schools and authorities worked together to ensure every young player was accounted for and safe. Still, the emotional toll was evident in tearful embraces and stunned silence among families leaving the scene.

Community leaders expressed deep sorrow for the loss and pledged support for the victims’ families. In a city still coping with the ripple effects of gun violence, this unexpected tragedy at a youth sporting event has brought both shock and grief.
The focus now turns to healing and understanding how a day meant for celebration ended in such profound loss.
