South Virginia Street Crash Kills Sparks Rider Clovis Wong

The late afternoon traffic along South Virginia Street in Reno turned tragic on February 26 when a motorcycle and a pickup truck collided just north of Damonte Ranch Parkway. When the dust settled, 22-year-old Clovis Wong of Sparks had lost his life in a violent crash that stunned motorists and left a busy stretch of road closed for hours.

Investigators say Wong was riding a Kawasaki ZX-10 motorcycle northbound shortly before 5:30 p.m. It was the kind of early evening when traffic tends to build as commuters head home. At the same moment, a 2018 Ram pickup truck was traveling southbound along the same roadway.

According to authorities, the driver of the truck attempted to make a left turn into a parking lot. As the truck turned across the northbound lanes, Wong’s motorcycle approached. The front of the bike slammed into the front of the pickup in a collision that happened in an instant but carried devastating consequences.

Emergency responders rushed to the scene, but the impact had already taken its toll. Wong was pronounced dead at the crash site. The young rider’s death left a somber mood over the area as police and emergency crews worked to secure the roadway and begin the long process of documenting the scene.

The crash forced authorities to shut down the northbound lanes of South Virginia Street between Damonte Ranch Parkway and Bishop Manogue Drive. Traffic in the area slowed to a crawl while investigators examined the scene and crews cleared debris from the roadway.

Officials say the driver of the pickup truck stayed at the scene after the collision and has been cooperating with investigators. Authorities have not yet determined whether speed, impairment, or any other factor played a role in the crash.

Behind the headlines, friends and family are remembering Wong as a familiar face in the Sparks community. A fundraiser created to support his loved ones describes him as someone who spent much of his life in the area and who once served with the Reno Police Department before later working in private security.

As investigators continue piecing together the moments leading up to the crash, the loss of a young rider has left many in the community reflecting on how quickly an ordinary drive along a busy road can turn into tragedy.
