Athens, Georgia woke up to grief after a late‑night shooting in the heart of downtown left 22‑year‑old Clayton Adams dead and two of his friends fighting for their lives.
It happened around 2:20 a.m. Saturday in a parking area along the 400 block of North Jackson Street, just off Hancock Avenue. Police say they found three men with gunshot wounds when they arrived. One victim, Clayton Adams of Hull, Georgia, was already gone. Two others, both in their early twenties, were rushed to the hospital. One of them is not expected to survive.

Friends and family are struggling to make sense of what happened. Those who knew Adams describe him as someone full of life and easy to be around. His brother said the news hit his family like a shock they can’t yet process. One close friend was also hit in the head and remains in critical condition as doctors work to save him.
Athens‑Clarke County Police and multiple agencies are still investigating how the shooting started. So far, they haven’t released any details about what led up to the violence or whether there was an argument or dispute beforehand. None of the victims had ties to the nearby University of Georgia.
By Saturday evening, police announced a breakthrough. Officers arrested 22‑year‑old Mark Desousa of Jefferson, Georgia in connection with the shooting. Desousa now faces serious charges including malice murder, aggravated assault, and aggravated battery. Authorities say evidence is still being collected as the case moves forward.
In a community long proud of its safety, the violence has shaken residents. Neighbors told reporters Athens rarely sees this level of deadly violence so close to downtown businesses and bars where people had been out enjoying the night. Many say they hope justice moves quickly for the families affected.
For now, friends are holding onto memories of Adams as people come together to support the injured and mourn the loss of one of their own. The investigation continues as more details are expected to emerge.
