Tyler, Texas — The Tyler community is reeling after a man identified as 70‑year‑old Daniel Walker was struck and killed by a vehicle late Wednesday night while crossing West Gentry Parkway near North Ross Avenue. Walker was hit just before midnight as he walked across the roadway outside of a marked crosswalk. First responders arrived quickly and worked to save him, but he died at the scene from his injuries.
Police say the driver was traveling west in the outside lane when the collision happened. The impact occurred well outside of any intersection or pedestrian crossing, leaving no opportunity for Walker to be seen in a safer crossing zone. No other people were hurt in the crash.

Officers blocked off the stretch of road between North Moore Avenue and North Confederate Avenue to conduct their investigation. That section has since reopened to traffic. The driver and several witnesses stayed to give statements and are cooperating with detectives. So far, authorities do not plan to charge the driver.
Walker was well known in Tyler for his warmth and steady presence in the community. Friends and neighbors describe him as someone who always had time for others and a familiar face around town. His sudden loss has left many struggling to make sense of a night that ended in such an avoidable tragedy.
Police are urging residents to be cautious when crossing busy streets, especially at night, and to use marked crosswalks whenever possible. The message comes as a painful reminder that even experienced, careful pedestrians can fall victim to a single moment of danger.
Family and friends have gathered in grief, sharing stories and memories of Walker’s kindness. His death has become a conversation point in Tyler about pedestrian safety and the need for more protective infrastructure on well‑traveled roads.
In the wake of the crash, neighbors have begun leaving flowers and notes at a makeshift memorial near the site. As the community mourns, many hope his passing will spur thoughtful action to prevent future losses on the city’s streets.
