Meridian Crash Claims Matthew Cox as Speed Investigated in Fatal Rollover

Meridian became the focus of a fatal investigation early Thursday after a single-vehicle crash claimed the life of 18-year-old Matthew Cox. Deputies say the young Kuna driver lost control of his car on South Meridian Road near East Columbia Road, setting off a violent rollover that ended at a power pole.

The call came in around 3:23 a.m. on Feb. 12. When deputies reached the scene, they found a black 2001 Jaguar S-Type that had left the northbound lane, rolled, and suffered catastrophic damage. Cox was the only occupant.

Authorities say there were no signs of other vehicles being involved. The crash unfolded in isolation, on a dark and quiet road, with no immediate witnesses reported at the scene.

Detectives now believe speed may have been a contributing factor. Members of the sheriff’s Collision Reconstruction Team are examining skid marks, vehicle damage, and roadway conditions to better understand how the crash developed.

The Ada County Coroner’s Office identified Cox on Friday. Officials noted that the final cause and manner of death are still pending, as standard investigative and medical reviews continue.

For investigators, the case is about facts and timing. For the community, it is about a teenager who did not make it home. One mistake or moment of lost control was enough to change everything.

Authorities continue to ask the public for any information that could help complete the picture. The goal, they say, is clarity, accountability, and learning what can be learned from a deadly stretch of road before another life is lost.
